Expedition Overview

Join us aboard the M.V Maya’s Dugong for a four-day whale and dolphin watching expedition followed by four days exploring the inner islands of Seychelles. Our expedition is led by Michel Vély, an experienced Marine Mammal Specialist, who will guide you through the biology and habitat of these marine mammals.

  • Whale and Dolphin Watching: Spend four days searching for whales and dolphins in their feeding and breeding areas. Participate in scientific observation, snorkeling, and listening to their songs using hydrophones.
  • Island Exploration: Discover the pristine beauty of Seychelles’ inner islands, including granite islands like Mahé and Praslin, and the coral islands like Denis. Experience the local wildlife, lush tropical vegetation, and breathtaking beaches.
  • Expert Guidance: Learn from lectures and workshops on marine mammal biology, species identification, and conservation efforts.

Itinerary

Day 1: Embarkation from Mahé, with a welcome barbecue dinner and introductory lecture on whales.

Days 2-5: Whale and Dolphin Expedition near Denis Island. Engage in scientific observation, snorkeling, and data collection.

Day 6: Explore Aride Island, a secluded nature reserve with rich birdlife and unique flora.

Day 7: Visit Praslin Island, home to the famous Vallee De Mai and the rare Coco de Mer palm.

Day 8: Discover Curieuse Island’s giant tortoises and mangrove forests, followed by snorkeling at St. Pierre Island.

Day 9: Experience La Digue, renowned for its stunning beaches and vanilla plantations.

Day 10: Early morning sail back to Mahé for disembarkation.

Marine Mammal Specialist Onboard – Michel Vély

Michel Vély, a passionate marine mammal specialist and veterinarian from France, has been studying marine mammals since 1979. He specializes in satellite telemetry on large cetaceans and has conducted extensive research in the Indian Ocean and Caribbean. Michel will share his vast knowledge and experience, enriching your understanding of these majestic creatures.

  • Embarkation Point: Port Victoria, Inter-Island Quay, Mahé
  • What to Bring: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, light coat, suitable footwear, and mosquito repellent.
